Spearmint essential oil (Mentha spicata) is steam distilled from the leaves of the plant. It is commonly used for flavoring in candies and toothpaste - in fact you've probably been ingesting it for years. However, there are many therapeutic uses of spearmint to consider, as well. The most abundant compound in spearmint oil is carvone, which gives spearmint its distinctive smell. Spearmint oil also contains significant amounts of limonene, dihydrocarvone, and 1,8-cineol.
